Variables and conditions

Variables bring content from a collection into a page. Conditions show or hide a block depending on the data or the visitor.

They are closely related: variables display a value, conditions make a decision about it.

Variables

A variable is a placeholder for a value. Inside a repeater or on an item page, type $ to open the variable picker and choose a field.

For example, a heading inside a blog repeater can use the post title variable. Each row shows its own title.

Formatting

Select a variable and open the Variable tab. The options depend on the field type.

  • Date fields can show the stored value, a short date, a medium date, a long date, a full date, or a relative time such as "2 days ago".

  • Select fields can show as plain text, simple tags, or colorful tags. Colorful tags come in a light-background and a dark-background version, so pick the one that matches where the tag sits. Simple tags follow the page's text color.

  • Multiple values can be separated with a comma, pipe, semicolon, slash, or space.

Formatting changes how the value looks, not the value itself.

Where variables work

Variables work where there is a data context:

  • Inside a repeater, where the context is the current item.

  • On an item page, where the context is the item being viewed.

  • In a nested loop, where the context is the related item.

Outside those places, there may be no value to show. Add a variable inside the right block.

Conditions

A condition is a block that only appears when its rules pass. Use it to show different content to different visitors or to hide a detail that does not apply.

Add a Condition block and put the content inside it. Open the Condition tab to add rules.

Each rule compares a value from the page with something else. You can match all rules or any rule.

Examples:

  • Show a "Sale" badge when a product's sale field is true.

  • Show a sign-in prompt when there is no current user.

  • Show a member-only note when the visitor is signed in.

  • Show a back-in-stock message when a product's stock field is above zero.

Page values and literal values

The left side of a rule is a value from the page, such as an item field or the current user. The right side can be a literal value you type, or another value from the page.

Use a literal for a fixed comparison, such as true or News. Use a page value when you need to compare two pieces of data.

Language

The left side can also be the Language value. Compare it with a language code (for example en, es, or hu) to show a block only on that language's page. It works without JavaScript, including on exported static pages.

Conditions are not styling conditions

The device menu and the state menu change how a block looks. The Condition block decides whether the block exists at all.

Use the device menu for a smaller font on mobile. Use a Condition block to hide a section from signed-out visitors.

A simple starting recipe

For a member-only note:

  1. Turn on Users & Login and create a sign-in page.

  2. Add a Condition block where the note should appear.

  3. Add a rule that checks the current user exists.

  4. Put the note inside the condition.

  5. Add a second Condition block for signed-out visitors with a sign-in link.

  6. Publish the page.

For a sale badge:

  1. Add a Condition block inside the product card.

  2. Add a rule that checks the sale field is true.

  3. Put the badge inside the condition.

  4. Style the badge.

  5. Publish and check a product with and without the sale field set.

Read Users and login for the account setup, and Repeaters for the data context.
