Editor tour

The editor keeps the page on a canvas and everything that controls it in the toolbar above. There are three parts: the top bar, the tabs and controls for the selected block, and the canvas. Most of your time is spent moving between the canvas and the toolbar.

Last updated

The top bar

The left side of the top bar shows your project and the current page. Use the page selector to switch pages or create a new one.

The right side has:

  • Comments, for leaving notes on blocks.

  • Ask Remy, for the AI assistant.

  • Undo and Redo.

  • Publish, which sends your changes to the live site.

The tab row

The row below the top bar starts with the area switcher. It shows the current area and opens the rest: Design, Database, Analytics, Settings, Style manager, and Workflows. Translations lives under Settings. Viewers do not see this switcher.

The rest of the row holds the tabs for the selected block. Box and Animation are always there. Other tabs appear when they apply: Text for a block with words, Image for a picture, and Action when the block can link somewhere. Blocks with their own settings add a tab, such as Accordion, Carousel, Repeater, Condition, Variable, Form, Menu, or Links. A form field gets a Field tab.

The tabs are split by concern on purpose: the tab row picks what you are changing, and the row below holds the controls for it.

After a divider on the right sit the block tree (Overview) and the device and state menus.

The controls row

The third row holds the controls for the active tab. Groups are separated by dividers. Changes apply immediately and are saved to the working copy as you go.

Some blocks contain smaller parts you can style on their own, such as carousel arrows, menu triggers, and language switcher links. A row of sub-element buttons appears at the start of the controls row when one is available. Select a part, then style it like any other block.

The canvas

The canvas is the page as visitors will see it. Click a block to select it. Click inside text to place the cursor, and the toolbar follows the block around it.

Small handles appear around the selected block. Use them to drag the block, open its action menu, or add a block nearby. You can also type / on an empty line to open the insert menu.

The slash menu hides more than it shows at first. Read Slash commands and hidden shortcuts for the entries that only appear inside forms or menus, and for the colon trigger that inserts icons.

The canvas is not a screenshot. It is the real page, so links, menus, accordions, carousels, and forms behave close to the published version. Forms do not submit while you are editing.

The tabs

The tabs change with the selection:

  • Box controls the block as a container: size, spacing, border, background, and position.

  • Text controls the words inside the block: font, size, weight, color, alignment, and text shadow.

  • Image controls the image source, alt text, and size.

  • Action controls where a link or button points.

  • Accordion, Carousel, Repeater, Form, Field, Menu, Links, Condition, and Variable appear for those blocks.

  • Animation controls reveal and scroll effects.

If a tab is missing, the selected block does not support it. Select a different block or a child element.

Overview, device, and state

Three tools sit at the right end of the tab row:

  • Overview lists every block on the page in order. Use it to select a block that is hard to click, hide a block, or edit its classes.

  • The device menu applies styles to tablet, mobile landscape, or mobile portrait. Styles flow from the largest screen to the smallest, so a tablet style also affects the phone sizes unless you override it there.

  • The state menu applies styles only on hover or only on the link to the current page.

Read Responsive design for the device menu.

Undo, redo, and saving

The editor saves your work continuously. Undo and redo use the usual keyboard shortcuts too: Cmd+Z and Shift+Cmd+Z on a Mac, Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z on Windows.

Undo covers editor changes. It does not undo publishing, deleting a collection, or changes made by Remy. Remy has its own undo action on each reply.

Item preview and publishing

The canvas is the working copy, not the live page. For a collection item page, a preview bar above the canvas lets you switch between items so you can check the template with real content.

Publish sends the current design to the live site. You can publish only the current page or every changed page. Publishing is separate from CMS items, which go live when you publish the item itself.

Read Domains and publishing for the full flow.

Getting help inside the editor

Select a block and open Ask Remy to ask about it. You can say "make this heading shorter", "change this section to two columns", or "why does this look wrong on mobile". Remy sees the selected block and the page around it.

Read Remy, the AI assistant for what Remy can and cannot do.
