Domains and publishing

Building a site and publishing it are two different steps. Your changes stay in the working copy until you publish. Visitors keep seeing the last published version.

Add a domain

Open Settings, then Custom domains, and add the domain you own.

You can use:

  • An apex domain, such as example.com.

  • A subdomain, such as www.example.com or shop.example.com.

The first domain you add becomes the default. If you add more, the others redirect to the default.

Point the domain to Remake

After adding the domain, Remake shows the DNS record to create at your domain provider.

  • For a subdomain, create a CNAME record pointing to the value shown.

  • For an apex domain, use ALIAS, ANAME, or CNAME, depending on what your provider supports.

Remove conflicting records for the same host. An old A record, AAAA record, or redirect can stop the new one from working.

Save the record, then choose Check DNS records. It can take a while for DNS changes to spread. If the check fails, wait and try again.

Publish the site

Choose Publish in the editor. You can publish:

  • Current page only, which leaves other pages as they are.

  • All pages, which publishes every changed page together.

Add a note about what changed, if it will be useful later. The note is optional.

A project needs a validated domain and an active hosting plan before it can publish. If either is missing, the publish dialog explains what to do.

What publishing includes

Publishing sends the current design and settings to the live site. That includes:

  • Pages and their content.

  • Components.

  • Collection page designs and field definitions.

  • Translations and translated page metadata.

  • Project settings such as SEO defaults, favicon, and title template.

What publishing does not include

CMS items are separate. When you publish an item, it goes live right away. You do not need to publish the whole site for each new blog post.

Workflows are also live immediately. Saving a workflow applies it to the live site without a deployment.

This means you can add content all week and publish the design only when it changes.

Before the first publish

Until the first publish, visitors see an under construction page. This is normal. Add a domain, publish once, and the site becomes available.

If a change is not showing

Check these in order:

  1. Did you publish the page or all pages?

  2. Is the domain validated?

  3. Is the item published, not a draft?

  4. Did you change a collection field? Publish the site again so the pages pick it up.

  5. Is the browser showing a cached version? Reload with a hard refresh.

A simple starting recipe

  1. Add your domain.

  2. Create the DNS record.

  3. Check DNS until it is valid.

  4. Choose a hosting plan.

  5. Publish all pages.

  6. Open the live site and check the home page, a menu link, and a form.

  7. Publish again after design changes. Publish items as you add them.

Taking a copy

You can download the published site as static HTML and your collection data as CSV. Read Exporting your site for what the archive contains and what it cannot do.
